The island was small; it only had an area of about eight square miles. The town which huddled round the harbour was even smaller due to the wood which covered about a quarter of the total island. The size of the wood was reduced due to the few large houses residing among the trees in man made clearings cleared many years before. The island had never been given a proper name and so it had always been known as ‘The Island’.
